Attention teenagers: If you had trouble landing a summer job last year, chances are your job search this year won't be much better.
Only one in 10 hiring managers say they'll hire more staff this summer, while 16% say they'll hire fewer, according to Snagajob, an hourly employment network for job seekers and employers.
A mere 29% think it will be "easy" for teens to find a summer job this year.
The overwhelming number of managers said they'd either hire the same as last year or not at all.
Certainly, this is better news than two years ago, when only 20% of managers thought teens would have an easy time finding work. But it still won't do too much to make a dent in the high teen unemployment rate, which came in at 23.8% for February.
Their unemployment rate remains above 20% for the 40th month in a row, the first time this has happened since the government started keeping records in 1948. And it's roughly the same as it was a year ago, while the national unemployment rate has fallen to 8.3%.
Teens that do land jobs won't see more money in their pockets either. Managers say they expect to pay an average of $10.90 per hour, basically unchanged from last year, Snagajob found.
There is a bit of good news on the horizon for teens though. They'll now be more likely to compete with their peers for the available spots, rather than adults still looking for more work. Some 57% of hiring managers believe that teens looking for summer work will face their biggest challenge from other high school or college students.
The job market might be getting better...but not for teens
Their unemployment rate remains above 20% for the 40th month in a row, the first time this has happened since the government started keeping records in 1948.
Last month, it edged up to 23.8%, roughly the same as a year ago and up a bit since December. The national unemployment rate, meanwhile, has fallen to 8.3%.
