One bourbon, two bourbon. Red bourbon, blue bourbon.March 9, 2012: 4:13 PM ET
I got an e-mail from one of my local liquor stores (is it a problem if I am on the list for more than one wine shop in my neighborhood?) alerting me to the fact that one of my favorite makers of brown liquor, Heaven Hill Distilleries, is now selling election-themed straight bourbon whiskey. (Yes, with an E. This is America! Although they make Whiskey in Ireland too. But I digress.)
Heaven Hill launched two new bourbons late last year for members of both parties. For the Democrats, you have Blue State Bourbon. And for the GOP, there is Red State Bourbon. The blue bottle has a donkey on it. And the red one, naturally, has an elephant.
Heaven Hill is wisely going the social route as well. There are Facebook pages set up for Red State and Blue State so people can vote for their favorite. Interestingly. Republican presidential candidates Rick Santorum, Ron Paul, Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney are all listed as "liking" Red State Bourbon. (Guessing Romney had a staffer try?) And Blue State's Facebook fans include NBC's Meet The Press, The Colbert Report and Michelle Obama.
If Republicans want some good news, Red State bourbon has 474 Facebook likes compared to 214 for Blue State. I am not sure if there is a correlation between Facebook likes and Electoral College votes though. I guess we'll find out in November.
But what's a registered Independent like me to do? I could always channel the spirit of Tammany Hall and vote twice. But I should probably do as much research as I can and sample both bourbons in order to make the most informed decision possible by November. All in the name of a better America of course.
