You know those suggested search terms that pop up whenever you start typing in Google's search field? Try searching "Who owns..."

We were surprised to find the first suggested term is "Who owns the Federal Reserve?"

Apparently, there's so much confusion about this question, the term garners 18,100 searches a month.

And just in case you're interested in hearing the answer straight from the horse's mouth, here's the Fed's official explanation.

"The Federal Reserve System fulfills its public mission as an independent entity within government.  It is not 'owned' by anyone and is not a private, profit-making institution."
